King Drosselbart (Thrushbeard) was a famous character in German legends and folklore. He had the unique ability of being able to change his identity when necessary to deal with different situations. For example, in addition to being the king, he could transform himself into a lowly peasant, handsome, soldier, and a speedy messenger among many others. His natural appearance, however, was somewhat homely and characterized by peculiar chin whiskers.

Like King Drosselbart, the Drahthaar can change identities to deal with different situations, becoming a pointer, retriever, tracker, companion or house pet, depending on the situation. In addition, the Drahthaar also shares the king's homely appearance and chin whiskers. It was these similarities that inspired the name DROSSELBART DRAHTHAARS.

Heracles vom Drosselbart "Rana" Owner: Billy Griswold, DVM, ArizonaDrosselbart Drahthaars are registered in Verein Deutsch Drahthaar (VDD), the German registration organization which has established a world wide reputation of excellence in breeding standards.

After 5 years of extensive research of the American bred German wirehaired pointers, Brittany spaniels, shorthairs and others, it was evident that inconsistency of results in breeding was a major problem. In 1981, I joined Verein Deutsch Drahthaar Group North America. Whereas the only real AKC requirement for registration is an approved pedigree, the German registration system requires that all dogs pass a series of tests including field performance, coat and confirmation evaluation, mental stability and several others prior to becoming eligible for breeding. It is through the utilization of this system that I found I could realize my objective to establish a line of Deutsch Drahthaars that are predictably and consistently high in performance.

To assist me in achieving this goal, I request that purchasers of Drosselbart pups join VDD and also that they test their pups in the VDD Natural Ability testing program. Through their association with VDD they receive training assistance and new insights into the capabilities of the Drahthaar. In addition, VDD and Drosselbart kennels will gain needed information which will assist us in maintaining and improving the quality of our breeding programs.
